Welcome to

Back to School Night 2016-17

Thank you so much for coming.  I will cover a lot of important information within a few minutes so I thought I would highlight the key points for you in writing.  If you have any questions, please ask!

q  Philosophy:  As a teacher seeking to educate with excellence, my goal is to educate the whole child in light of their individual and developmental needs so they can be a life-long learner, and also make a positive contribution to society while shining Christ’s Light.

q  Curriculum: We will work on many things throughout the year. We will have both structured and free time.  We will have time for group exploration and time for the children to explore at their own pace. For September our themes are “I am Special” and “All Things Red” which will include our science themes of ladybugs and apples. The handwriting method we use is Zaner Bloser.  For math we will be using the Harcourt School Publishers Pre-Kindergarten Program that will explore different concepts.  Religion is taught with the “I am Special Program” for four and five year olds.  For letter recognition and phonics we will use Zoo Phonics. The important thing to remember is that we will offer a wide variety of developmentally appropriate learning experiences.  We will also be using Kimochis which is a social and emotional learning tool and a playful way for children and adults to identify and express feelings.

q  Hours: 8:15 to 12:15 Monday - Friday.  Mrs. Stewart and I will be at the main school building until 8:10, so our doors will be locked until 8:15. The first few weeks of school will be Minimum Days with dismissal at 11:15.  Please be on time for the start and end of each class.  Our first full day will be Tuesday, September 6th.

q  Sign in and out every day with your full legal signature.  In the note section write anything special that we need to know.

q  Parking-When you are dropping off in the morning park in marked parking spaces only. Pick up will be by the gate.  You are to enter from Bont Lane and drive to the Pre-K area.  You will have to get out of your car and sign you child out and put them in their car seat.   On rainy days pick up will be in the classroom.

q  Please close the fence gate when you come in and go out.

q  A weekly class letter with important information goes out on Friday in your child’s folder along with their week’s work.  A copy of the class letter will also be on the school’s website www.st-mary.net.   Please return your child’s folder on Monday.

q  The weekly school news is also posted on the school’s website every Wednesday. A plastic envelope goes home each Wednesday and needs to be returned on Thursday with any forms that are due.

q  Any other communication can be done in person, by email or phone.  Please put it writing if I need to follow up on the conversation.  My email address is vschwartz@csdo.org.

q  Share-a-fruit days will be Tuesday and Thursday. Please have your child bring in a   washed piece of fruit on those days.

q  Homework is given on most Fridays. It is always DUE on Monday morning unless otherwise noted.

q  Birthdays… If you would like to make a gift of a new book or something special for the classroom, that would be great!  Please no treats.

Hot lunch: Choicelunch provides daily lunches for a fee. You will receive more information in the Wednesday School Newsletter.  Once a month there is a pizza lunch.  Order forms will be in the weekly newsletter.  If your child forgets lunch we will give them a snack to tide them over.

Lunches:  We cannot heat up your child’s lunch.  Make sure you send in a drink and any silverware your child might need.

q  Label everything!!!!

q  Uniforms are to be worn on a daily basis.  The children will have PE once a week so the girls will need to wear uniform shorts or long pants that day.  Once a month the school offers a Free Dress Day.  If your child chooses to wear free dress they must bring in a can of food and one dollar.  The food goes to the St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry and the dollar goes to a worthy cause.

q  When your child will be out for the day you must let us know by phone or email before the start of school; our phone number is 938-5114.  If you fail to call you will receive a phone call from the office.

q  Book orders from Scholastic Book Clubs are a great way to buy books.  Order forms will be sent home monthly.  You may order online or if you would like you can send your order back with a check by the date requested on the form.

q  Volunteers please refer to the Requirements Flier

q  Surprise Storyteller: Come in and read your favorite story to the class.  The sign-up sheet with the dates is located by the front door.

q  Volunteer Hours- Many opportunities but all parents MUST participate in the BACK TO HOME NIGHT which will be held in late May/early June.  This will be the time when we will start cleaning up for the summer.

q  A wish list for our classroom is posted by the front door.

q  Supply Angels are helpers that help buy the extras that make this program the best! If everyone could take one month it would really help!  Your investment would be between $15 and $30 plus an hour of your time.  This is just out of the goodness of your heart and is purely voluntary.   Please look for the sign-up board near the front door.

Whenever important things are happening at home, please let us know what is going on… both the good and the bad.  Open and honest communication is the best way for us to relate to you and your child and to be prepared for any problems that may arise.

We look forward to a wonderful year playing and working with your child!
